Gísli Páll Sigmundsson fæddist 23. júlí 1851 á Ljótsstöðum í Skagafirði. Faðir: Sigmundur Pálsson, verslunarstjóri á Hofsósi og bóndi á Ljótsstöðum. Móðir: Margrét Þorláksdóttir, húsmóðir á Ljótsstöðum. Gísli ólst upp hjá foreldrum sínum á Ljótsstöðum. ,,Hann sigldi til Danmerkur og nam trésmíði, hann smíðaði meðal annars fyrstu taðkvörnina og plóg. Bóndi á Ljótsstöðum 1890-1914. Á búskaparárum sínum á Ljótsstöðum gegndi hann ýmsum trúnaðarstörfum fyrir hrepp sinn." Gísli kvæntist árið 1889 Friðriku Guðrúnu Friðriksdóttur (1854-1939) frá Miklabæ. Hún hafði áður verið gift Páli, bróður Gísla, en hann dó árið 1884. Gísli og Friðrika áttu eina dóttur saman en Friðrika hafði eignast aðra dóttur með Páli.
