Fæddur í Krossanesi í Vallhólmi, foreldrar hans voru Jósafat Guðmundsson og Guðrún Ólafsdóttir. Móðir hans lést þegar hann var aðeins nokkurra vikna gamall og tók þá Margrét móðursystir hans við heimilinu. Ólst upp í Krossanesi og á Syðri-Hofdölum. Verkamaður á Sauðárkróki. Maki: Þórey Sigtryggsdóttir (1907-1953), þau áttu tvær dætur.
