Foreldrar: Andrés Pétursson b. á Öldubakka á Skaga og v. og k.h. Kristjana Jóhanna Jónsdóttir. Gunnhildur fylgdi foreldrum sínum framan af en var svo í vistum hér og þar; á Þorbjargarstöðum í Laxárdal 1916-1919, á Breiðstöðum í Gönguskörðum 1920-1921, á Veðramóti 1922 þar sem hún kynntist manni sínum Abel Jónssyni. Þau fluttu til Sauðárkróks árið 1923 þar sem þau bjuggu lengst af. Gunnhildur og Abel eignuðust ekki börn en áttu eina fósturdóttur.
