Jósafat Sigurðsson fæddist á Syðri-Hofdölum í Skagafirði 23. nóvember 1917. Foreldrar hans voru Þóranna Magnúsdóttir og Sigurður G. Jósafatsson. ,,Jósafat ólst upp í Skagafirði og starfaði þar á unglings- og fyrstu fullorðinsárum. Hann flutti til Siglufjarðar upp úr 1940, þar sem hann starfaði lengst af sem fisksali, annar eigandi Fiskbúðar Jósa og Bödda á Siglufirði. Búsettur í Reykjavík frá 1985. Kvæntist Margréti G. Guðmundsdóttur, f. í Reykjavík, þau eignuðust fjögur börn, fyrir átti Margrét þrjú börn.
