Kristján fæddist á Fagranesi á Reykjaströnd í Skagafirði árið 1945. Hann lauk stúndentsprófi frá Menntaskólanum á Akureyri, BA - prófi og cand. mag.prófi í íslenskum bókmenntum frá H.Í. Kristján kenndi lengi við Menntaskólann á Laugarvatni. Var lektor í íslenskum bókmenntum í Björgvin í Noregi, einnig kenndi hann við KHÍ. Kristján hefur starfað við Árnastofnun frá árinu 1999. Eiginkona hans er Sigurborg Hilmarsdóttir. Þau eiga þrjú börn.
