History
Á hreppsfundi að Hólum 30. apríl 1885 var af skólastjóra Jósef J Björnsson ( stendur Bjarnason í bók ) borin upp sú uppástunga að stofna Lestrafélag í Hólahreppi, var því máli vel tekið af mörgum og 10 fundarmenn létu skrá sig sem meðlimi félagsins. Drög að lögum félagsins voru svo borin upp 28. júní af Þorgils Þorgilssyni, búfræðingi á Hólum en þau hafði Jósef Bjarnason samið og voru samþykkt með nokkrum breytingum ein og segir í fundagerðabók þessa tíma. ( A). Í lögum segir 2.gr það skal vera augnamið og tilgangur félagsins að efla menntun og menntunnarfýsn hjá hreppsbúum með því ða gefa þeim kost á að fá íslenskar bækur, blöð og tímarit til að lesa með mjög litlum kostnaði.
