Foreldrar: Gunnar Gunnarsson bóndi í Syðra-Vallholti og k.h. Ingunn Ólafsdóttir. Ólst upp með þeim fyrst í stað en fór svo í vinnumennsku. Sveinn var bóndi í Borgarey 1878-1885, Syðra-Vallholti 1885-1888, Bakka í Hólmi 1888-1893 og á Mælifellsá 1893-1909. Dvaldi í Dölum og í Borgarfirði 1909-1917, lengst af í lausamennsku. Kaupmaður í Reykjavík 1917-1924 og á Sauðárkróki 1924 til æviloka. Skrifaði tvær bækur, Veraldarsögu 1921 og Ævisögu Karls Magnússonar 1905.
Maki: Margrét Þórunn Árnadóttir (1855-1928). Þau eignuðust 13 börn og dóu tvö þeirra ung.
