Sonur Stefáns Vagnssonar b. og skálds á Hjaltastöðum og k.h. Helgu Jónsdóttur frá Flugumýri. ,,Jón fór ungur til Reykjavíkur þar sem hann stundaði leigubifreiðaakstur á Bifreiðastöðinni Hreyfli, um tíma annaðist hann vöruflutninga fyrir Kaupfélag Skagfirðinga, en var síðan verkstæðisformaður á Bifreiðaverkstæði KS á Sauðárkróki í 40 ár." Hinn 23.12. 1951 kvæntist Jón Petru Gísladóttur, þau eignuðust þrjú börn.
